MA candidate Iman Yasser Ayoub’s first master’s thesis defense took place at the School of Linguistics & Translation, Badr University in Cairo.

Thesis title: A Multimodal Transcription of Egyptian Arabic-Movie Posters and their English Translated Versions on Netflix

After a discussion on Sunday, February 23, 2025, the committee agreed to grant the student a master’s degree in Translation from the English Language Department at the School of Linguistics and Translation at Badr University in Cairo.

The thesis addresses a new approach in Translation Studies between Arabic and English, namely analyzing the asymmetrical relationship between verbal and visual modes in visual texts such as Arabic movie posters and their English subtitled versions on Netflix. The study aims to investigate the choices made by Netflix translators in translating movie titles and how the analysis of the three main visual categories developed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) significantly contribute to understanding the sources of meaning-making in the movie posters. The dissertation is a remarkable contribution to Translation Studies as it is an interdisciplinary study that combines translation studies, visual image analysis, and cultural studies.
